The AM2 Electrotechnical Assessment of Occupational Competence is designed for those individuals wishing to practice as an electrician or as a maintenance electrician. Suitable candidates are those undertaking an electrotechnical apprenticeship programme and candidates who are required to undergo an 'initial assessment' of their current levels of competence.

AM2 is a practical assessment with a short online knowledge component, taken over 14 hours in total. During this time candidates undertake a series of timed tasks in specially equipped booths containing typical electrical installation wiring systems. The exercises include installation, inspection and testing and fault finding and the work must comply with the current IEE wiring regulations and be carried out in line with Health & Safety best practice.

  • A1. Safe Isolation and Risk Assessment
  • A. Composite Installation (8.5 hours)
  • B. Inspection and Testing (3.5 hours)
  • C. Fault Diagnosis (2 hours)
  • D. Assessment of Applied Knowledge (1 hour)

All candidates should be familiar with the assessment content and should posses the basic underpinning knowledge skills and practical skills required. All candidates will need to complete the 'NET Self-Assessment Checklist' prior to attendance and submit the completed document at the initial candidate briefing. Candidates who have not covered the work activities listed in the NET self-assessment checklist may require additional or more in depth training and should seek assistance from their employer or training provider.
